Voters in Durango, Colo., have repealed an ordinance to put a 10-cent fee on plastic bags.

The ordinance, passed by the City Council in August, was set to take effect in March. The fee would have extended to paper bags as well. A group of residents petitioned the city for a vote, which took place Nov. 5.

The 10-cent fee was repealed 56.25 percent to 43.75 percent, or 2,664 votes to 2,072 votes, according to the county elections office. Durango is located just north of the New Mexico border, more than 300 miles southwest of Denver.

The ordinance would have applied the fee to full-time markets with 25,000 square feet of space or more.

Voters in Homer, Alaska, repealed a bag ban ordinance in October after a petition drive against the measure. Voters in Issaquah, Wash., will decide the fate of its bag ban in a February 2014 referendum.
